The biorhythms begin at birth and rise and fall through positive and negative stages roughly every month. The most noticeable are the primary biorhythms of the physical, emotional, and intellectual cycles. The word 'biorhythm' literally means 'the rhythm of life'.
There are many obvious cycles in nature, such as the phases of the moon, the tides, day/night, sleeping/waking, astrological cycles, etc. The biorhythms are another natural cycle, but since they are biological rhythms, they are less noticeable.
Dr Wilhem Fliess and Hermanna Swoboda developed the theory of physical and emotional biorhythms during the begining of the last century. The intellectual cycle was discovered later, in the 1920s, by Alfred Teltscher. Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis, took a great interest in biorhythms, and was a friend of Fliess. He saw them as a major breakthrough in biology.

A biorhythm is represented as a sine wave, which passes through a central critical line at the beginning, middle and end of each cycle. These 'critical days' are the most stressful points in a biorhythm cycle, days when we are at our most vulnerable.
Biorhythms can be applied to almost any aspect of life, but there are some areas where they have been found to be most useful. These include sports performance, knowing when you are most accident-prone, to taking advantage of the best days for increased creativity or using your intelligence, and relationship compatability.
